Monterrey wins 2021 CONCACAF Champions League title 5th times

CONCACAF Champions League 2020-21: Monterrey put down Club America to claim 5th time SCCL title.

CF Monterrey won a wild CONCACAF Champions League Final 1-0 on Thursday night, claiming the club’s fifth Champions League title 2021.

It was an energetic and fast-paced final which saw Monterrey inspired by their home fans at the Estadio BBVA.

Santiago Solari’s side were put under immediate pressure by Monterrey and conceded in the ninth minute when Rogelio Funes Mori tapped in from close range.

Club América defender Sebastián Caceres whiffed on a routine clearance, a mistake that weighed heavily on the visitors in the immediate aftermath of the opening goal.

In a surprising move, Solari benched Mexico international Sebastián Córdova, but when Club América began the second half sluggishly.

Yet still, América came inches away — and a VAR review away — from equalizing in the 10th minute of added time. A shot went off the crossbar, and the rebound appeared to have been handled on the ground by Monterrey forward Maxi Meza inside his own penalty area.

Head coach Javier Aguirre, who once played for Club América, won his fifth title as a manager, a tally that includes a Copa del Rey triumph with Osasuna in 2004-2005.

This Champions League trophy was Aguirre’s second title with a Mexican club. Aguirre led Pachuca to a Liga MX championship in 1999.

For Solari, the loss has placed immense pressure on his ability to lead Club América to the 2021 Liga MX Apertura title. América were upset by Pachuca in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Clausura tournament.
