According to the Ranking of Total AFCAN 2016 there are CAN teams are engaged into 5 Pots.
Pot 1- level I : Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cap Verde, RD Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia & Zambia.
Pot 2- level II: Angola, Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea, Morocco, Mozambique, South Africa, Togo & Uganda.
Pot 3 - level III: Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Central Africa, Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Malawi, Niger, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania & Zimbabwe .
Pot 4 - level IV : Gambia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Mauritania, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles & Swaziland .
Pot 5 - level V: Comoros, Djibouti, Madagascar, Mauritius, Sao Tome E Principe & South Sudan .
The winners of each group will join the host country in the Final Tournament as well as the best 3 runner-ups in all 12 Groups.

There are 12 groups in total with 4 countries each. Each group winner will join hosts Cameroon in the competition, as well as the best 3 runners-up.
The dates of the matches will be as follows:
- 20-28 March 2017: 2 Legs of the Preliminary Round
- 05-13 June 2017: Match Day 1
- 19-27 March 2018: Match Day 2
- 0-3-11 September 2018: Match Day 3 & Match Day 4
- 08-16 October 2018: Match Day 5
- 05-13 November 2018: Match Day 6
